HELP FOR CHILDREN

Choose your Condition

Asthma

What is asthma and what triggers it? Asthma is a condition that affects the airways. Children with asthma have airways which are sensitive to different things, which can easily irritate them.
The most common triggers for children are:

  • Colds, flu

  • Cigarette smoke (passive smoking)

  • Exercise

  • Allergies (pollen, dust, furry, mold)

  • Grass seeds

When the airways contact with an asthma trigger, the muscle around the bronchial tubes tighten and thicken and the air passages become inflamed and full of mucus. As the airway narrows it becomes difficult to breathe. That is why your child will struggle to take a nice deep breath. Sometimes you might hear a wheezing noise as well.

How The Salt Clinic Can Help

For those suffering from asthma, Salt Therapy can not only bring much needed relief, but can also prevent the frequent recurrence of symptoms. Salt Therapy is a clinically proven natural, safe and beneficial method of treatment for every age group from 6 months old. Our medical device can help to:

Ear Infection

  • Kill bacteria (the salt dries out germs and bacteria in your respiratory system)

  • It is Anti-Inflammatory (Based on clinical studies the dry, saline-diffused air reduces inflammation in the whole respiratory tract)

  • It has Mucolytic effects (loosens excessive mucus, speeds the elimination of toxins)

  • Removes pathogen agents (airborne pollen)

  • Strengthens the immune system and restores energy levels

  • It reduces IgE levels (the immune system won’t over-react to asthma/allergy triggers)

As a result of Salt Therapy, inflammation and mast cell response within the bronchi reduces and the quality and function of breathing improves. Thanks to the desensitization of the immune response, sleep patterns will improve and acute attacks and the need for medication will substantially decrease. This means the child will have more energy to play or exercise and become stronger and more resilient to every day infections.

How Often Should You Attend?

  • Depending on age and severity, 15 to 30 sessions are recommended to achieve long term results.

  • The sessions should be frequent, about 2 or 3 a week is suggested.

  • In most children, after a course of salt therapy airways become normal and symptoms disappear.

  • The treatment's efficacy is estimated up to 98%.

  • Typically, a child coming for two months will suffer no symptoms for 10 months.

  • Most children do one to two Salt Therapy courses a year. In between they might come back for some top-up sessions if needed.

Ear Infection

Ear infections are common in babies and small children and can be very painful. They are usually divided into those which occur in the ear canal (otitis externa) and those which occur in the small space behind the eardrum (the middle ear).
The middle ear space can sometimes become filled with mucus (fluid), often during a cold. The mucus can then become infected by germs (bacteria or viruses). Children with glue ear who have mucus behind their eardrum are more prone to ear infections.
A chronic ear infection can be more destructive than an acute ear infection because its effects are prolonged or repeated, and it could cause permanent damage to the ear. A chronic long-term infection may show less severe symptoms - so the infection may remain unnoticed and untreated for a long time.

EAR INFECTION

Children who have recurring bouts of otitis media may have a trypanosome tube (ear tube) placed into the ear during surgery to permit fluid to drain from the middle ear. If a child has a bulging eardrum and is experiencing severe pain, a myringotomy (surgical incision of the eardrum) may be done to release the buildup.

Symptoms Of An Ear Infection

  • Earache is common but does not always occur

  • Dulled hearing may develop for a few days

  • A high temperature (fever) is common

  • Children may feel sick or vomit and can be generally unwell

  • Sometimes the eardrum can burst (perforates), this allows the infected mucus out and the ear becomes runny for a few days.

CYSTIC FIBROSIS

There are over 1200 people living with cystic fibrosis in Ireland. Difficulty breathing is the most serious symptom and can result from frequent lung infections – these can be treated but not cured by antibiotics and other medications.

SYMPTOMS OF CYSTIC FIBROSIS

  • Troublesome cough

  • Diarrhea

  • Repeated chest infections

  • Infertility

  • Sinus infections

  • Breathlessness

  • Poor growth

COLDS AND COUGHS

A cold is a viral infection that affects the nose, throat and sinuses. While adults usually have two to four colds a year, children can catch as many as 7 - 10. Children will often cough a lot when they have a cold, this is because of mucus trickling down the back of the throat.

Babies and anyone whose immune system is compromised can be at risk of developing more serious complications, such as a bacterial chest infection.

Coughs are incredibly common especially during winter months. It is one of the most common reasons for parents to bring their children to see their GP. They can be very disruptive to a child’s sleep as they tend to get worse when they lie down. A cough is a reflex action to clear your airways of mucus and irritants, foreign particles and microbes. Coughs can be dry or chesty. They usually clear up within two weeks.

Most coughs clear up within two weeks although babies and anyone whose immune system is compromised can be at risk of developing more serious complications, such as a bacterial chest infection.

DRY OR CHEST COUGH

Dry and Tickly coughs are usually felt in the back of the throat as a tickle that starts you coughing. It happens when the throat and upper airways become inflamed. Both dry coughs and tickly coughs are known as non-productive coughs (no phlegm). A dry cough is most likely the result of infection by cold and flu viruses. Your brain thinks the inflammation in your throat and upper airways is a foreign object and tries to remove it by coughing. It can also be triggered by atmospheric pollutants (such as cigarette smoke) irritating your throat.

Chesty coughs (mucus coughs) are caused by an excessive amount of mucus in the chest. The cough is helpful because it clears mucus from your lungs. When common cold or flu viruses enter the respiratory system, mucus is produced to clear away the bacteria and help to fight infection. This increased mucus can gather in the respiratory system and a cough reflex is triggered to help remove the extra phlegm.

DRY OR CHEST COUGH

WHAT CAUSES A COUGH

A cough is usually caused by a virus or bacterial infection. Most people with a cough have an upper respiratory tract infection which is caused by a virus or in more severe cases a chest infection or pneumonia. Some possible non-infectious causes include:

DRY OR CHEST COUGH

  • Allergic rhinitis (hay fever)

  • A flare-up of a long-term condition such as asthma or COPD

  • Smoking or passive smoking.

  • Acid reflux

ABOUT ECZEMA

Eczema and contact dermatitis account for 84-90% of occupational skin disease, and affects up to one in five children. It usually appears for the first time before your child is two years old, and more than half of children will outgrow it by the time they're teenagers, but it can also continue into adulthood.

Eczema is a form of dermatitis, which is an acute or chronic inflammation of the skin.

Having eczema means that the skin's barrier doesn't work as well as it should, which makes it drier. Skin will be more prone to infections and allergens can enter the skin more easily, which can make the condition worse.

In mild cases of eczema, the skin is dry, scaly, red and itchy. In more severe cases there may be weeping, crusting and bleeding. Constant scratching causes the skin to split and bleed and also leaves it open to infection.

Atopic eczema is a genetic condition based on the interaction between a number of genes and environmental factors. In most cases there will be a family history of either eczema or one of the other ‘atopic’ conditions i.e. asthma or hay fever.

Eczema can't be cured, but it can be controlled with the right treatments.

HOW THE SALT CAVE CAN HELP?

If your child suffers from eczema it can be very difficult for them as scratching or rubbing the affected area can make it worse.

Our medical device can help to:

  • Kill bacteria (the salt dries out all the germs and bacteria)

  • Anti- Inflammatory (Based on clinical studies the dry, saline diffused air reduces inflammation)

  • It reduces IgE levels (reduces oversensitivity of the immune system)

Internally, Salt Therapy can help to lower the IgE level, a measure of antibodies which is often high in people with allergies. Salt Therapy helps to lower this level, meaning the immune system does not over-react to try to deal with the problem.

On the outside of the body, it can help to reduce inflammation on the skin and improves circulation on the skin surface. Particles of the dry salt aerosol kill bacteria and fungi and cleanse your skin and respiratory tract of allergens like pollen, dust or smoke which trigger the condition. After a few sessions, the itching sensation on your child’s skin decreases, cracks heal and rashes disappear.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU ATTEND?

15 to 20 sessions are recommended for the best results.
The sessions should be frequent, about 2 – 3 per week is suggested.

CHEST INFECTIONS

A chest infection affects the lungs, either in the larger airways (bronchitis) or in the smaller air sacs (pneumonia). It is slightly worse than a heavy cold and is extremely common in children affecting about one third of babies in their first year. The infection itself may only last five to seven days but the symptoms can last much longer. Young children are more at risk of Pneumonia.

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is an inflammation of the air sacs (alveoli) in the lungs caused viruses and bacteria. The most common bacteria affecting children is streptococcus pneumonia. Pneumonia can come on suddenly, often after a viral infection such as a cold. Symptoms include a high fever, coughing, breathlessness and sometimes pleurisy – a sharp chest pain when breathing in.

Bronchiolitis

Bronchiolitis is a common illness of the respiratory tract and is caused by an infection in the airways (bronchioles) that lead to the lungs. When these airways become inflamed, they swell and fill with mucus, which makes breathing difficult. Bronchiolitis most often affects infants and younger children as their small airways can become blocked more easily than those of older children or adults. This typically occurs during the first 2 years of life, with peak occurrence at about 3 to 6 months of age.

The early symptoms of bronchiolitis are very similar to those of a common cold. The first symptom is usually a blocked or runny nose. Your child may also have a slight cough or fever. Symptoms usually get worse during the first three days and then gradually improve. During this time, your child may experience the following symptoms:

  • A rasping and persistent dry cough

  • Rapid or noisy breathing

  • Brief pauses in their breathing

  • Feeding less and having fewer wet nappies

  • Vomiting after feeding

  • Being irritable

How It Works

Salt has many beneficial properties including:

  • Anti-bacterial

  • Anti-inflammatory

  • Mucolytic effects: loosens excessive mucus and speeds up mucociliary transport

  • Eliminates pathogen agents (airborne pollen)

  • Lessens IgE level (immune system oversensitivity)

  • Strengthen the immune system

During a session, clients breathe in the dry, salt-enriched air into the lungs, the salt is so fine it reaches deep into the lungs and begins to reduce inflammation, kill bacteria and loosens phlegm, which begins to clear rapidly so clients have more lung capacity. The salt will also have anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial effect on the skin whilst reducing your IgE levels and your sensitivity to allergies. Salt therapy can help to:

  • Lessen the need for inhalers and antibiotics

  • Makes breathing easier after just a couple of sessions

  • Improve lung function

  • Reduce the amount of hospital admittances

  • Reduce the amount of sick days from school / work

  • Ease sneezing, coughing, and shortness of breath

  • Clear phlegm and sticky mucus from lungs

  • Clear phlegm and sticky mucus from lungs

  • Increase the prevention of respiratory tract diseases

  • Fortify your immune system

  • Extend remission times

  • Improve general health and quality of life

  • The treatment's effectiveness is projected at 75-98% contingent on circumstances

  • Relieve irritations and inflammation of the skin

  • Improve sport performance for athletes
